Vertical is a format. It is not a crop you apply at the end.

Cropping a 16:9 piece into 9:16 is technically easy. It is also one of the more reliable ways to make expensive work feel like it does not belong on the platform it is posted to. We still see it often: a brand invests in a well-shot landscape film, then asks for a vertical version for Stories, Reels or Douyin. Faces get cut. Text gets buried under UI. The cut feels like it was timed for a different screen.

Vertical works when it is conceived vertically. Here is what that actually means on a job.

1. Shoot the frame you will publish
If the film has to live on Reels, Stories, TikTok or Douyin, plan 9:16 in the recce — not in the grade. A centre crop is a rescue, not a strategy.

2. Leave room for the app
Platform chrome sits on the image: captions, buttons, music ticks, profile rails. Keep faces, logos and type out of the lower third and the right edge. If the audience cannot read it, it is not in the film.

3. Write type for a phone in a hand
What looks fine on a 27-inch edit monitor will collapse on a 6-inch screen. Bigger type. Fewer words. Longer on screen.

4. Pace for the thumb, not the trailer
Horizontal films can take a breath. Vertical usually cannot. Hold information long enough to read, short enough to survive the swipe.

5. Pick a priority before you shoot
This is not an argument against landscape. It is an argument against treating vertical as an afterthought. Trying to serve both formats equally often produces two versions that both feel slightly compromised. Decide which one the budget is really for.

The brands that look most comfortable on mobile in Asia are usually the ones that brief the format early — not the ones who ask for “a vertical cut” the night before launch.

Learning summary

  • Don’t crop a landscape film and call it native.

  • Compose 9:16 from the recce, not the export.

  • Keep key faces and text out of UI zones.

  • Size type for a phone, not a monitor.

  • Pace for a swipe, not a screening room.

  • Name the priority format before the shoot.
