Most “ultimate guides” are useful once. Very few are useful again next month.

The internet is loud. New channels arrive every week with must-watch energy and a new LUT behind them. We have found that consistency beats volume. Rather than chasing whoever is trending, we keep a short list of sources that actually change how we work on the next job.

1. Film Riot — lighting and problem-solving

Still one of the most practical channels for real-world camera problems. The tone is approachable, and the advice tends to be usable the next day on a corporate or education set — not just in a garage studio.

2. Cullen Kelly — colour with reasons

A different category: more technical, more demanding. Useful when you want to understand why a grade holds together, rather than copying a look and hoping it survives mixed office light.

3. Sony Cinema Line — camera-specific, not hype

Surprisingly useful for the bodies we actually carry. When you need the setting, the profile, or the limitation explained by the people who built it, this is cleaner than a recap video.

4. Hong Kong Film Archive — context for work made here

Craft is not only menus and nodes. The Archive’s online catalogues, filmography search and publications give cultural and historical context that still matters when you are shooting in this region.

These are not the only good sources. They are the ones we return to. A small trusted list, revisited regularly, usually does more for the work than an endless stream of new recommendations.

If you are building your own list, look for people who explain their reasoning rather than only displaying results. The “why” travels to the next brief. The “what” expires with the trend.

Learning summary

  • Keep a short list. Revisit it.

  • Prefer sources you can use on the next job.

  • Learn the reason, not just the look.

  • Use manufacturer channels for camera-specific facts.

  • Add local context when you shoot in Hong Kong.

  • The “why” lasts longer than the “what.”
