When another version is cheap, the scarce skill is knowing which version to kill.

Tool menus will keep changing. The work that remains hard is older than the models: saying what the film is for, recognising the frame that belongs, and telling a client when the impressive option is wrong for this brand. Those abilities were always useful. They become the bottleneck once production capacity is no longer the scarce resource.

1. Briefing and art direction

If you cannot describe light, frame, audience and what to avoid, the model will invent a look for you. That look will be competent and slightly nobody’s. Prompting is briefing. Shot lists, decks and prompts are the same muscle.

2. Evaluation speed

Generating twenty options is easy. Throwing eighteen away without a meeting is the skill. Editors and art directors who can sort fast — “close, not us, possible, no” — will outrun people who wait for consensus on every frame.

3. Taste, plus context

Taste is knowing what feels finished. Context is knowing what feels finished here: a Harrow corridor is not a fashion lookbook; a leadership portrait is not a music-video close-up; a Douyin cut is not a festival trailer. Cultural and institutional judgement does not arrive with the software.

4. Coherence across variations

Campaigns and retainers now produce more assets from the same idea. Holding a visual system — skin, space, type, pace — across generated and photographed work is direction. Volume without that system is a mood board.

5. Honest limits, said early

Part of the job is telling a client what the tools cannot reliably do: generative B-roll next to real students, AI voice as the school’s public face, a same-day film that still needs thinking time. People building careers in this space need tool fluency. They also need the authority to say no. Judgement is the career. The menus are the kit.

Learning summary

  1. Cheap options make choosing the scarce skill.

  2. Briefing is now a production craft.

  3. Learn to discard quickly.

  4. Taste needs local and brand context.

  5. Coherence across many assets is art direction.

  6. Saying what the tools cannot do is part of trust.
