The Kit List That Turns a Simple Trip Into a Border Problem | Catch Lyt
A camera bag is not personal luggage. Customs does not care that the body is “just for work.”
We still see productions lose a morning — or a whole day — because the kit was packed like a weekend away. Serial numbers missing. Lenses in a different case from the carnet. Batteries treated as an afterthought. A shoot that was meant to feel light arrives heavy, late, and already tense.
Travelling with film and photo equipment is part of the craft. Treat it like a department, not a chore.
1. List what will actually cross the border
Every body, lens, light, drive and battery. Serial numbers. Values. Who owns it. A kit list you wrote from memory at midnight is not a kit list.
2. Decide the paperwork before you book the flight
For temporary professional equipment, an ATA Carnet is often the cleanest path in and out. Hong Kong accepts it for professional gear. Do not assume a free port means no questions. Questions still happen when the case looks like a shop.
3. Pack for inspection, not for aesthetics
Officers need to see what you declared. Foam that hides serials slows you down. So does a case that does not match the list. Make the bag easy to open and easy to believe.
4. Separate consumables from tools
Carnets cover equipment you will bring back. They do not cover things you will use up. Gels, tape, catering, giveaways — those are a different problem. Mixing them is how a smooth entry becomes a conversation.
5. Plan the return like the departure
The job is not finished at wrap. The same list has to leave the city. Missing items, swapped rental heads, and “we bought a drive locally” are how a temporary import becomes a permanent headache.
The crews who move quietly through airports are rarely the ones with the least gear. They are the ones who treated the border as part of the schedule.
Learning summary
